"American Idol Exploiting Contestants For Better Ratings?"

"American Idol" may be breaking records in terms of viewers, but some of the 40 million people who watched this week were not pleased.

Some wonder if the FOX reality show is exploiting people with disabilities.
Most people would agree if you're going to audition for a reality TV show, you should know what you're getting into and you should understand that you might very well be humiliated on national television.
But what if you're talking about people who either don't or can't understand that? For that reason, some fans of American Idol believe FOX is putting its ethics on idle.

While "American Idol" is supposed to be about...
...finding the next music superstar, early auditions seem to be more about finding the worst singers in America.
And while that's certainly entertaining, some of this week's contestants gave viewers the impression that the show is unfairly mocking people who may have disabilities. That's the impression idol fan Jennifer McLane got.
"It makes me feel uncomfortable and I probably won't watch it anymore."

Elise McMillan of Vanderbilt's Kennedy Center also watched the tape. She works with adults with disabilities and has a son with downs syndrome. While she couldn't tell if any of the contestants were mentally or physically challenged she'sstill concerned.
"I guess my first thoughts are that we're laughing, not with these contestants but at the expense of these contestants."

When asked, a FOX spokesman issued this statement: "Producers are not qualified to assess someone's mental capabilities, however they would never eliminate someone or prevent him or her from auditioning because they think he/she is challenged."

With thousands of people auditioning in each city, producers are pushing these people to the front of the line to audition in front of Paula, Randy and Simon and before a national television audience.
What's more, the judges, and host RyanSeacrest at times patronize these contestants to get more laughs by asking them to dance or sing more songs.

McMillan says shows like this, create more problems for people who are socially or mentally challenged.
"I know it must be watched by lots of kids and families and teenagers what is that teaching our kids about our society to poke fun at other people?"

FOX says they try to make the audition experience a positive one for every contestant. In reality exploiting people for ratings and entertainment usually trumps integrity.
