Beyonce's dream role

SHE'S at the end of a long day of interviews, but Beyonce Knowles looks as fresh as a daisy. Clad in a white silk shirt and blue jeans from her House of Dereon label, she's a poised, confident presence who gives the impression of being effortlessly, casually glamorous.
"Beyonce always brings a little Marilyn Monroe to everything she does," Dreamgirls writer/director Bill Condon notes.

It's a bit of stretch, then, to imagine Knowles as a caged songbird afraid of spreading her wings.

But that's exactly the character she plays in Dreamgirls, the rise-and-fall saga of a gritty Detroit girl group.

In the film, an adaptation of a Tony-winning musical by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger, Knowles takes on the Diana Ross-like role of Deena Jones, a background singer who is thrust front and centre when the group's overweight lead singer Effie (Jennifer Hudson of American Idol fame) is tossed aside.

Hudson, who gets to deliver the scalding soul work-out, And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going, has emerged as an early front-runner for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Her performance is being hailed as nothing short of a revelation.

All day long, Knowles has been asked about the reports that she's green with envy over Hudson's remarkable screen debut. Calmly but firmly, the R & B star insists nothing could be further from the truth.

"It's really unfortunate that everyone is saying I'm jealous of Jennifer," Knowles says. "It hurts my heart because it's so cliched.

"They're saying that I'm mad when I knew going into this that I was playing Deena. Because I'm a star, they just automatically assume I'm not humble enough to sit down and take a back seat, which I am."

Knowles grew up listening to the Dreamgirls original cast album and imaging herself as all of the characters, even James "Thunder" Early, the funk dynamo portrayed in the movie by Eddie Murphy.

"I knew that the character that I played wasn't the star," Knowles says. "Deena wasn't the underdog. She didn't have the struggle and the pain and the dramatic scenes that Effie had, and I was fine with that.

"I'm already a star. I already have nine Grammys. Everyone knows I can sing. I did this because I wanted people to know that I can act and I can play someone so different from myself."

Knowles admits she would have loved to have sung Effie's show-stopping number. After all, it's a song that almost single-handedly won a Tony for Jennifer Holliday in the original 1981 production of the show.

"I wish I could've gained 20 pounds and played Effie," Knowles says, laughing. "I absolutely would have gained the weight, but Bill didn't even believe that I could be Deena. So imagine if I would've said, 'Bill, I want to be Effie'."

Knowles doesn't hold back when asked to offer an assessment of Hudson's diva-licious portrayal.

"Jennifer Hudson had such a pressure, first of all, never being in a film and never have done an album and still having to live up to those expectations," Knowles says.

For Condon, Knowles' performance is just as impressive.

"She's a star and yet she blended into the background," says the filmmaker, who scripted Chicago before taking on the Dreamgirls challenge.

"She played Deena with complete integrity. She never once asked for her character to be stronger or to get more scenes. She was totally self-effacing."

Knowles digs deep in Dreamgirls. Deena doesn't hit bottom like Effie does, but during the impressive Listen number, she stands up for herself and finally breaks free of her controlling manger/husband (Jamie Foxx).

For inspiration, Knowles recalled a moment when she was 18 and decided to take the reins of her career.

"We had our Listen moment," she says about her father-manager, Mathew Knowles.

"His idea of overexposure and mine was different. He thought more was more and I thought less was more. Eventually, I had to tell him, 'I'm 18. I know what I want. I'm going to be in control'.

"Now we have weekly meetings. He still manages me and fights for me, but if I tell him that I want to go off and do a movie in Prague and play a crack-head, he'll say, 'OK, Beyonce. If that's what you want to do, then great'."

Knowles, who helped sell more than 50 million albums as lead singer of Destiny's Child, stresses she's far removed from the introverted Deena Jones.

"I'm not Deena," she says. "In Destiny's Child, I was more of an Effie, a protector. Deena grew up in the projects.

"Deena didn't have a father. Deena used her manager as her father figure. She needed him to get out of the projects. She became the lead singer because of her looks and not because of her voice.

"Me, I have both of my parents. I grew up in a middle to upper-class neighbourhood. I went to private school. I was the lead singer because of my voice and because I write all of my own songs.

"I control my own situation. My motivation does not come from pain. It comes from example. I saw my mother and my father work hard.

"Therefore, I work hard. When I lost on Star Search when I was nine, I went back to my house and my nice bed and my nice family. When Deena lost, she went back to the projects."

At 25, Knowles has been performing for more than half her life. At 13, she founded Destiny's Child.

Three years ago, her first solo CD, Dangerously In Love, proved her staying power and turned her into, to quote Spin magazine, "R & B's answer to Madonna".

Not unlike Madonna, Beyonce has dabbled in movies, turning up in The Fighting Temptations, Austin Powers: Goldmember and The Pink Panther.

Since 2003, Knowles has been dating rap superstar Jay-Z. She rarely speaks about him publicly, a decision she blames on that Star Search wipe-out.

"When I was really young, I told everyone I was going to be on Star Search and then we lost and it was the most embarrassing thing in my life," she says.

"So from that point on I didn't tell anyone at school anything about myself. Just all of a sudden, one day I was out of the school and on their television sets. I know they were like, 'Oh my gosh, she sat behind me in algebra'!"

As for the rumours that Knowles and Jay-Z are planning a secret wedding, she says, "I feel like when I want to do that, I will."

She's planning on having a family some day but not any time soon.

"I know better than saying I'll take time off to have children because I've seen a lot of people say that they're going to retire and then they come out of it," she says, a reference to Jay-Z's retirement shuffle.

"So I'm not going to say that. Besides, I'm too young and I love what I do too much."

Superstar Beyonce Knowles and her rapper boyfriend Jay Z are still denying reports that they will get married anytime soon. However, the couple did spend time house hunting over the holiday.

Bodog.com has posted betting odds at -125 that the couple will marry this year.

The two were vacationing in the Dominican Republic and were very fond of one house they visited. According to reports they inquired about buying the home but were told it was not for sale. The owners of the home suggested the couple check out the luxury development Casa de Campo, owned by Oscar De La Renta. The private community has four golf courses, 20 swimming pools, 19 tennis courts, private beaches, its own doctors, police and fire departments. The villas range in price from $3 million to $6 million.

To add to the growing speculation, Beyonce was spotted buying a white dress this week. The pop star saw the blue Guy Laroche dress Hilary Swank wore when she won her Oscar for Million Dollar Baby in a New York store window and fell in love with it. Apparently she rushed back the next day to have it ordered in white.
A source told the New York Post, "The staff were so sweet, gracious and soft-spoken. This dress could easily be worn as a wedding gown."

Bet on Beyonce marrying Jay Z at Bodog.com

Beyonce is planning a 3rd album for late Summer 2007. During an interview with Reuters, Knowles says she plans on having another banner year for 2007. "Many artists release albums then go away for several years until releasing another one. I love to work because this is what I love to do…I'm looking to start writing new songs at the beginning of the year, then hopefully find time to record them in between dates of my world tour in the Spring."

In the meantime, Jay Z has been busy teaming up with GM designing the “Jay Z Blue,” a custom 2007 Yukon Denali. The vehicle will appear at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which opens to the public on January 13th. The “Jay Z Blue” is due out later this year. Only time will tell when Beyonce and Jay Z will walk down the aisle.

Beyonce is crossing the country looking for just 40 dancers to perform in her upcoming world tour. She's already scouted hopefuls in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston. On Thursday she hit the Big Apple, where the talent was twisting, turning and defying gravity.

As Minerva Baret said, in this company you must walk the walk.

"And you would think I can walk. Girl, I can walk, uh huh," Baret said. "It's a certain type of walk they're looking for. And within a dancer you can tell whether she got the walk or she don't.

With a cast including Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx, you might think Dreamgirls couldn’t be a complete flop. And though Knowles is nowhere near Oscar-worthy, there is no denying the girl can sing. However, stellar singing can’t save this movie.

The movie follows the rise and fall of a female soul trio called The Dreams as their hits slowly climb the pop charts during the early ’60s.

Trouble starts when The Dreams, originally backup vocalists for Jimmy Early (Eddie Murphy), embark on their own career. Though Effie (Jennifer Hudson) is known as the “one with the voice,” Deena (Knowles) steals the spotlight — and Effie’s beau — with flawless maneuvering.

Sounds an awful lot like Destiny’s Child, doesn’t it? The only difference is Knowles is also screwing the band’s manager (Jamie Foxx). If this was real life, it wouldn’t just be backstabbing, it would be incestual.

Dreamgirls’ aesthetics are amazing. The costumes, makeup, and hair designs are a stunningly accurate reflection of the time period. However, a lack of dialogue and interesting content ruins the film. Dreamgirls is filled with cheesy musical sequences instead of strong acting.

If the surprise musical aspect — songs sung outside the group’s actual songs — doesn’t make you want to vacate the theatre, the parallels between Knowles’ character and herself might make you hurl into your over-priced, over-sized popcorn.

The lineup of Grammy performers was announced Thursday and several of the biggest acts of last year, including many of the actual nominees will get a chance to show why they deserve their acclaim by performing on the show, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beyonce Knowles, Gnarls Barkley, and The Dixie Chicks. All four of those acts are multiple nominees.

The Chili Peppers got six nominations this year for their double CD Stadium Arcadium, including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. They also nailed Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Rock Song, and Best Short Form Music Video, according to MTV.com, for "Dani California." They're likely to take to the stage more than just to perform. They already have one Grammy for 1992's "Give It Away."

Gnarls Barkley, who are likely to perform the Grammy-nominated (for Record of the Year and Best Urban Alternative Performance) "Crazy", are also nominated for Album of the Year for St. Elsewhere and Best Alternative Album.

Believe it or not, Beyonce Knowles is the veteran, having won nine Grammys already and having performed on the stage in the past. She's up for Best Female R&B Performance for "Ring the Alarm," Best Contemporary R&B Album for B'Day, Best R&B Song for "Deja Vu," and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Deja Vu" (which she performed with Jay-Z).

Finally, The Dixie Chicks are also vets, having won eight Grammys in the past and scoring nods this year for Album of the Year and Best Country Album for Taking the Long Way. Their hit single "Not Ready to Make Nice" has a chance to win in Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Country Performance By a Duo or Group With Vocal.

A few presenters were also announced on Thursday, including Pink, Rihanna, Terrence Howard, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In other music/CBS news, the station announced, at the same time that they were announcing the performers and presenters for the Grammys, that Nelly Furtado will guest star on CSI: New York on February 7th and Mary J. Blige will appear on The Ghost Whisperer on February 9th. Both are nominated for Grammys this year, in an interesting case of cross-network promotion. It's going to be a musical week on CBS.
