Shyamali, Sanjaya in race for American Idol

Two NRI siblings sang their way to Hollywood after successful auditions at Seattle for the sixth edition of the hugely-popular American Idol, a nationwide talent hunt in the US for the best singing voice.

19-year-old Shyamali Malakar from Lacey, Washington, and her brother Sanjaya walked into the auditioning room to face judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson and soon won their 'golden tickets' to Hollywood where they will compete with the other shortlisted candidates for the contest.

Shyamali and Sanjaya said their father was a classical Indian musician and "they were raised around music." "You're better than you give yourself credit. You're very nervous and you don't have reason to be. You're very good, very subtle, but great. You have energy about you, I think your voice is really pretty," Paula told Shayamali after a melodious rendition of 'Summertime'. The Seattle auditions were held on Jan 17 and 18.

Simon, known for his acerbic comments, was however, not too impressed.
